Viewing questions I see bars saying

BANNER high - customize this

and similar. Following the link gives a "page not found" error

Can I turn these off?

Those are for advertising; presumably Breck can add whatever advertising or other messages he wants in those spaces. Once you're over 200 rep, some of the banners will vanish.

The banner that's shown with the questions will disappear to be precise. The sidebars remain after 200 rep if this follows the same layout as StackOverflow.

The highly estimated administrator of this site will presumably communicate that
a) the SE software is still beta (see the disclaimer banner [SQLA is in BETA]) and
b) it will surely get better (but that requires time and energy).
So we better have patience ;-)

OK, I must admit I was tempted into trying to "Customize this" myself, to no avail ...

Yeah, they're ugly, and so's the administrator! ( lazy, too :)

As Graeme predicted, the banner messages have gone away now that I have gained some more (undeserved) "reputation". The sidebar also seems to have gone.

Thanks for the explanations.
