What are Index Adds, really?

Quite often the Index Adds statistic has no apparent explanation: high values when nothing is going on, and non-zero values for connections that never perform any inserts, updates or deletes.

~~All versions of SQL Anywhere exhibit this behavior.~~

If memory serves (it often doesn't) this behavior is not version specific :)
