The "Check for Updates" is returning a message stating that the Update Server could not be contacted. I have tried already a few times from Sybase Central and from the ISQL screen.

Yup, me too... also, it's been a day or so since the daily "Update Checker" has popped up.

(03 Nov '11, 17:05) Breck Carter

Same for me. Looks like the service is down.

Me, too:-)

(04 Nov '11, 08:06) Volker Barth

Sometimes the service is down - to determine that it's not a bug in the Administration Tools, you can issue the "Check For Updates" request from the command line:

dbsupport -iu

The above command worked for me when I tried it just now. (So did DBISQL.)

If both aren't able to contact the server, then the service is likely down and our web team will look into that. If one works and the other doesn't, it's likely a bug.

That command does not work for me just now (using v12.0.1.3389) - Message (when using DBLANG EN):

Error checking for updates. Please try again later.

I just tried and didn't work for me either.

@Dan: You tried from inside the office, on some corporate interweb link, right?

...maybe it's the out-of-order files, like this (upgrade with more recent date than later EBF):

Platform: HP-UX Itanium

SQL Anywhere - Maintenance Release, Upgrade of 12.0.0 to 12.0.1 12.0.1 01 Nov 2011 EBF/Patch

SQL Anywhere - Express Bug Fix, Update of 12.0.1 to build 3469 12.0.1 14 Oct 2011 EBF/Patch
(04 Nov '11, 17:00) Breck Carter

I just tried and the site used to run the dbsupport seems to be down!

www.ianywhere.com

(05 Nov '11, 09:16) Derli Marcochi

It's still "just sleeping"...

FWIW I can access the Sybase download site, i.e. manually downloading any EBF is no problem...

(07 Nov '11, 03:09) Volker Barth

Same for me, sybase.com is alive, ianywhere.com dead (even ping isunsuccessfull )

(07 Nov '11, 04:03) Reimer Pods

...though I'm not sure how trustworthy a failing "ping" is - AFAIK some sites generally don't respond to pings for security reasons.

Tracing route to www.ianywhere.com [192.138.151.207] over a maximum of 30 hops:

...

12 102 ms 122 ms 151 ms ae-41-90.car1.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.152.195]

13 SYBASE-INC.car1.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.53.16.162] reports: Destination net unreachable.

If it didn't say SanJose in it, I'd ask if the destination server was hosted in the Bloomfield, Connecticut area, since they've been without electricity for over a week now.

My guess is the server has been moved into the cloud or something technical like that, SQL Anywhere - NoDemand :-)

Thanks for the report everybody - I checked and it looks like ianywhere.com is down from outside Sybase, but works from within the Sybase network. There is a different IP address that resolves to ianywhere.com external to Sybase network than the internal network and this external ip address is not working. It's being investigated - again, thanks to the community for pointing this out.

FWIW, www.ianywhere.com has been available again from outside Sybase for at least 16 hours now - see the comments since @Derli's answer.

However, it now redirects to http://www.sybase.com/mobilize - I do not know whether this was the case before.

We have checked the updates from a workstation with 12.0.1.3457 build installed. The service is returning "You are UP to date" but we know that 3484 is already available.

When I run dbsupport /iu I receive the output below:

SQL Anywhere Support Utility Version 12.0.1.3457
There are no updates to SQL Anywhere Server 12 Database Server 12.0.1.3457 for Windows x86.
There are no updates to SQL Anywhere Server 12 Client 12.0.1.3457 for Windows x86.
There are no updates to SQL Anywhere 12 English Documentation 12.0.1.20110324 for Windows x86.
There are no updates to SQL Anywhere 12 Administration Tools 12.0.1.3457 for Windows x86.

Hi guys, We are in the process of fixing this. It should start getting recommended within the next few minutes.

(17 Nov '11, 15:45) Dan Cummins

Works correctly now, shows build 3484. Thanx!

I checked and there was a renumbering of IP's by our IT department, which resulted in this problem. It was not apparent to those of us sitting inside the building, since the machine has a different IP when viewed from our side.

Thanks again to the community for pointing this out so we could get it fixed!

Developer 1 : Who can we blame for this ?

Developer 2 : The web team ?

Developer 1 : Hmmm no they might see the forum

Developer 2 : What about the systems team, they never go on the forum

Developer 1 : Great idea

So you're saying no one "sitting in the building" has an external network connection to make sure external access does work as well? - That comes as a surprise to me...

(15 Nov '11, 16:51) Volker Barth

Volker - it's not that we don't have machines with external connections. It was, rather, the fact that anyone who tried the service from within our building and got no error led to a delay in trying to determine precisely what the problem was.

Sounds like a variation on my two favorites: "It doesn't happen on my machine" or "I'd be really furious that you didn't tell me about this sooner, if I wasn't so happy you finally told me about it."

Thanks for getting it fixed!

(15 Nov '11, 18:01) carolstone

Glenn, frankly, that's what I had expected - been there, done that:)

(15 Nov '11, 19:12) Volker Barth

Worst website ever... not ianywhere.com, but sybase.com.

If you try to post a "Feedback" on sybase.com, like

Bug - www.ianywhere.com 192.138.151.207 has been down for several days.

it crashes thusly:

This symptom was first noted in February.

You got a "Thanks for your feedback" and even one for "taking the time" - so what do you complain...?

(07 Nov '11, 04:47) Volker Barth

The point is... the "Thank you" messages may be meaningless because the "ServletException" may indicate my input was lost... surely this application rolls back database updates when the application crashes... oh, no, I forgot, it's sybase.com :)

(15 Nov '11, 15:46) Breck Carter

Sorry, I should have used that "isn't-it-ironic" tag:)

(15 Nov '11, 17:16) Volker Barth

I just tried the Check for Updates and it did run AS EXPECTED !!!!

Yep, www.ianywhere.com is available, too.

Now we would like to get to know what has happened, don't we?

(07 Nov '11, 17:07) Volker Barth

Yes, I also think it would be interesting to know what was the reason of the issues with this service.

(07 Nov '11, 17:46) Derli Marcochi

Thanks for everyone's input in this post!!
